How to Avoid Academic Burnout

How to Avoid Academic Burnout

by Cherie McCord Leave a Comment

You wake up in the morning and already feel tired. The only thought about the need to get up and go to college makes you feel anxiety and panic. Do you remember times when you were happy to enter this college and show up there every day? Judging by the fact that you’re reading this now, something was wrong. The homework seems extremely difficult, and poor academic performance is another aspect that plunges you into depression. Is this familiar to you? If yes, you have to admit that you have academic burnout. Those who haven’t faced it should have understood that this problem is very serious.

The growing course loads make students devote more and more free time to studying and doing homework. Educators seem to be blind, or they just ignore the problems students face. And even though both students and other people try to make the problem of academic burnout as public as possible, the percentage of students suffering from it doesn’t become lower. At least, college and university students become aware of this problem and can prevent themselves from it. Today we’ll discuss the ways and tips that’ll help you to avoid burnout during studying.

Table of Contents

  • 1.   Divide the work into several phases
  • 2.   Be physically active
  • 3.   Spend time with friends
  • 4.   Don’t hesitate to contact professors
  • 5.   Visualize your success
  • 6.   Improve time-management
    • To study shouldn’t mean to suffer

1.   Divide the work into several phases

A huge academic load causes academic burnout, so continuing to handle huge scopes of work won’t help you prevent it. You should understand that saving the homework for later isn’t the best approach to studying. First of all, you’ll hardly be able to maintain good academic performance. Second, the attempts to do all assignments on the last day often fail, and students decide to ask for professional assistance to cope with the load. Reflective essay writing service is very popular among students since essays pose difficulties. If you can’t write essays for certain reasons, text to expert helpers and order an analogy essay or any other paper you may need. Please, keep in mind that your mental health is of primary importance.

2.   Be physically active

The abundance of grunt work can drastically change you and your life. Even the most active personalities started to keep a sedentary lifestyle due to the huge academic load. We don’t want you to do the same, especially since physical activity benefits the brainwork and improves your cognitive abilities. It’s good if you are involved in college athletics. If not, try to find the activity that interests you and practice it 2-3 times a week. Sports help students get distracted and eliminate stress faster.

3.   Spend time with friends

It’s difficult to study in college or university and have no friends at all. Find a buddy within the groupmates or other students in college because staying alone isn’t an option. You may seem that it’s easy to get through all difficulties alone, but you’re deeply mistaken. Every person should have friends to have a walk, watch movies, and participate in some activities. If you were the life of the party when you attended school and now became the homebody, your mental and emotional stability wouldn’t last long.

4.   Don’t hesitate to contact professors

The task of all students is to try to maintain good and friendly relationships with all professors. Let’s not forget that professors aren’t the people to blame for the huge academic load. They understand how difficult it can be for you and are always ready to help you. It’s okay not to understand something on the first try, so why not ask a professor for help? If you can’t complete the assignment and submit it on the deadline, just warn the professor about it. You care about your mental health, and it’s okay. No one will punish you.

5.   Visualize your success

A positive attitude means a lot in studying. Doing homework may be difficult, but when you take a break and imagine what you’ll do after you finish it, you seem to open a new source of energy and work with renewed vigor. It’s up to each student to believe in the power of suggestion or not, but why not give this technique a chance?

6.   Improve time-management

At least half of all students have difficulties with homework just because they have poor time-management skills. If you think you don’t have time to study, you probably don’t know how to manage your time effectively. How much time do you spend procrastinating, talking on the phone, and scrolling the newsfeed? Learn how to create plans, prioritize tasks and use various checklists, get rid of distractions, and you’ll notice that the amount of time you have is higher than you thought.

To study shouldn’t mean to suffer

We want all students to understand that they have to limit certain negative aspects of studying to avoid academic burnout. Sometimes it’s necessary to change the habits to continue studying, obtaining new skills and knowledge, and being happy. The main thing you all must remember is that this stage of life can’t be easy: now you invest your time and efforts, and after several years you’ll get great dividends.
