Choosing The Right Fertilizer For Your Lawn: Where To Start

Choosing The Right Fertilizer For Your Lawn: Where To Start

by Cherie McCord

Everyone wants a show-stopping lawn, especially as we move into the warmer months and the weather outside is nice. Whether planning afternoons with the kids or sitting on the porch enjoying a lovely breeze, a well-maintained lawn is for everyone. Keeping up with it can seem daunting sometimes, but with the right foundation, you can keep your lawn pristine during the best months of the year.

Giving your lawn the right nutrients will help ensure it is lush and dense throughout the season. Before purchasing an expensive product you think you should use, take a deeper look at what your lawn truly needs. Outside of the standard trim to promote growth, sometimes our lawns need an extra boost.

Before you consider adding fertilizer to your lawn, consider the points below to ensure you find the right products without trial and error.

Think About Your Climate

Depending on where you are positioned, you may need different products compared to a friend in another region. That is why taking a good look at the plants you’re trying to grow is important. You will need a lot of extra effort and preservation techniques if you try to maintain plants not native to your region. It most certainly can be done, however, with the proper funds and allotted time.

Take Note Of Weeds

Make sure that you assess the type and quantity of weeds that may be on your property. You don’t want to provide the weeds with a place to thrive. Maintaining a healthy lawn is actually a good way to help prevent the spread of weeds. Depending on the number of weeds you are starting within your area, you may want to kill unwelcome vegetation before you move on to fertilization.

Check The Soil

If you struggle to get your plants to grow, even after dedicated time, water, and fertilizer, you may need to look deeper to get to the root of the problem. Different plants require different compositions of fertilizer to thrive. You may be providing your plants with the extras that they need, but if the soil itself is off, you may be doing more harm than good. If your soil is too basic or too acidic, it could be causing problems for your plants that are trying to grow.

Be Consistent & Patient

Every lawn is going to be different. Whether you’re treating Kentucky BlueGrass or Fescue, there is a lot of work to be done. Knowing what you’re up against is more than half of the battle, so research your climate and plants before you go spending money on any additives. It’s the best way to make sure you’re treating your lawn properly, top and bottom. Maintaining a healthy and vibrant lawn can be easy when you are equipped with the right products to get the job done. Doing a bit of research ahead of time will take out the guesswork and leave you with more time for maintenance.
