What is hearing loss?

What is hearing loss?

by Cherie McCord

The dysfunction of even one of the senses is always associated with problems in everyday functioning. Not only can we not cope with ordinary activities, but also interpersonal interactions are significantly disturbed, which over time can lead to social alienation, depression, or simply poverty. These are the effects of hearing loss – what do you need to know about hearing loss?

What is hearing loss – definition

This term is used to describe disturbances in the perception of sounds from the environment, which is simply manifested in hearing some of them worse. In the initial phase, it may not be noticeable to us, which is why prophylaxis is so important and will allow us to control the state of our hearing, and appropriate treatment will be implemented at the very first dysfunctions. A free hearing test, which you can do yourself at home, is extremely useful in prophylaxis.

Disturbances in the perception of sounds occur as a result of defects and dysfunctions in the hearing organ, that is, in the ear or the auditory centers of the brain. Damage to the hearing organ can therefore affect any part of the auditory pathway, i.e., for example, the eardrum, cochlea, ossicles, and reach even deeper.

Conductive and sensorineural hearing loss

We divide hearing loss into conductive and sensorineural. The first one is associated with the dysfunction of the middle and outer ear. It is characterized by lowering the hearing threshold in the case of low frequencies. This condition can be successfully cured, among other things, with the help of medication, but it is necessary to diagnose the problem as early as possible, which is possible and facilitated by a free hearing test.

Sensorineural hearing loss is damage to the hair cells in the cochlea, i.e. the inner ear. In this case, the hearing threshold in the high-frequency band is lowered. This hearing impairment is characteristic primarily of elderly people, which is a natural symptom of aging. This disease entity can also progress, so it is worth regularly carrying out a free hearing test and seeing a doctor as soon as possible. Both hearing loss can be treated with hearing aids.

Where does hearing loss come from?

The causes of hearing loss can be very different and affect both adults and children. They can, above all, be congenital and acquired. Congenital hearing loss may have genetic causes related to the diseases that the mother experiences during pregnancy, medications, and mechanical injuries.

Acquired hearing loss is the one that most often appears with age. The hearing organ ages just like any other part of the body, and if not properly cared for, it can appear much earlier – even around the age of 35. A free hearing test allows you to detect any abnormalities early and thus encourages us to visit a doctor. Acquired hearing loss can also be caused by diseases, regular exposure to loud noise, e.g., due to work performed, or even improper hygiene.
