Poker Pets: The Ultimate Guide to Training Your Furry Bluffing Partners

Poker Pets: The Ultimate Guide to Training Your Furry Bluffing Partners

by Cherie McCord

Whether you’re a cat or a dog person or you have a different animal as a pet, if you also play on US poker sites, you might have thought, how can I get them to help me with poker? Well, even if that concept has never crossed your mind here’s a jovial take on how they might be able to help. Don’t blame us if they don’t grasp the concept of a winning hand though!!!

Bark or meow at a good hand

The behavioral association is one of the key pillars that any pet owner will depend upon when training their friend. Getting them to associate good behavior with getting a treat is a common practice, i.e. performing a trick, sitting when asked, etc will then usually lead to the human giving them a small tasty treat. So the theory is, why not show them a pair of ace cards or other good combinations and give them a treat? If you did this enough you could have them bark whenever they see such cards. This would give you a real advantage in a game with your friends or at a casino where they allow dogs/cats. Have them scan the play area and report back with their sound as to whether the other players have good hands or not.

Whether it works every time on great us poker sites and with each variation of the deck is an unknown quantity but it’s a decent idea if your cat or dog is observant enough.

Bark or meow at a bad hand

A little bit like the above suggestion but instead of having your dog or cat make a noise to signal that you have a good hand, why not get them to tell you that you’ve got a poorer hand? This could work wonders if you think you have a high pair but your pet notices that your opponents are sitting on a royal flush or a full house. If they were able to tell you that before you lose money they definitely deserve a treat or two.

Use existing pet technology

If you’re a high-tech pet owner you might have already invested in some decent technology to help keep your pet safe. I.e. a little head or harness camera, often seen on police dogs. Again, you will need to have your pets with you at the same location as the live poker game but if you have them walk around the room with a decent vantage point they could be able to capture the opposition cards when they are looking at them. Of course, you will need to have your app open on your phone to monitor the footage/live feed. Try not to get caught doing so!

Teach your pets to disrupt the game

If you’re stuck with a terrible hand and not many chips left in your possession, you might want to void the round. It’s difficult to say that to most players without a proper reason. Casinos will laugh at you and your friends will insist you continue playing. But they probably won’t have any issue if the dog, cat or snake climbs up on the table and reveals the river before it should be visible. It might take some detailed training like prompting your pet to mount the table then shuffle the cards and give it a treat but it’s probably not impossible to do so.

Showcase unusual pets

Do you have a snake? A bear? Or another animal that some people would consider out of the ordinary? Well if you can host a poker night, be sure to have the animal where all the other players can see it. While they might not be able to grasp the concept of a full house, they will be a distraction for the other players who might not be able to play their best poker as they will be too busy looking at the snake slithering around in its tank, as for most people it is not something they see very often.

Get the parrot talking

Parrots might not be as popular as they used to be as pets but poker players could see the merit in them when they’re playing. It’s well known they just mimic the sounds they hear, rather than actually meaning the content. Well, maybe ardent parrot owners will contest that. However, the parrot-owning poker-player crossover community will be able to get their talkative pet to make outbursts during a poker game which could completely throw off and distract the other players.
