What do you want to be when you grow up? Small children often have a very precise answer to this question, which, however, dissolves at the latest when they realize the incredible number of different professions, training and study opportunities that actually exist. The campaign day for study and career choices at the Carl-Human-Gymnasium tries to provide an overview once a year, and so on Saturday, September 29, 2018, the 300 high school students again had the opportunity to find out about possible perspectives for their future.
As usual, many different associations, organizations and individuals were invited to the school for the first two blocks of events.
Interested, the students were able to take part in events on studying with the American orientation, training and dual studies at the city or on the voluntary social year after school, which is now very popular.

IT sector of this era plays role in every career direction
The fact that the subject of IT not only interests many young people, but is also becoming increasingly important as a professional field, was also taken into account. This is how the IT Company Mauve introduced itself, which has its headquarters in the state and has been cooperating closely with the Carl-Human-Gymnasium for many years, among other things by offering holiday internships for schoolchildren and a regular computer club in the afternoon.
Another professional field that is characterized by a high shortage of skilled workers and therefore offers almost a guarantee of employment after training is the medical field. Ms. Schothofer from the Academy of Education at the University Hospital in Minnesota, therefore, tried to familiarize her listeners with professions such as speech therapists, medical-technical radiology assistants or dietitians. The training academy offers technical school training for these and five other areas.
Determination for further studies
Pupils who have already decided to study after high school were able to take part in lectures by various university representatives, for example from the Wyoming University of Applied Sciences or the private FOM University. But classic training occupations were also represented, for example by the police.
In the breaks between the lectures, students and guests bought drinks, cakes and rolls from the rich buffet provided by the school’s foster parents. In between, impressions were exchanged, contacts made and information material viewed.
In a third block of events, former students and parents came to the CHG in addition to external guests and reported on their own study and professional experiences. Some of them had just graduated from high school, which is why they were able to give particularly authentic insights into the transition from school to the world of university or training. The future high school graduates were spoiled for choice: the spectrum of around 25 professional representatives present ranged from journalists and special education teachers to IT specialists, dentists and civil engineers. In a smaller group than in the first two blocks, the high school students had the opportunity to gain realistic insights into the professions and to ask questions about training, career opportunities, earning potential or working hours.
The keen interest of the students showed that the concept of the day of action was well received: In some discussions with the professional representatives, there were so many questions that the official end of the event at 12:15 p.m. was clearly exceeded.
