Take Accurate Measurements
Before you fit anything, it’s important that you take the correct measurements for your garage door so you don’t end up with a door too big or too small. You can get someone to help you and measure the space you’ll need for the door. Every pack will be different.
A garage door can be up to 2500mm wide. You need to measure the drive through width which is the space in the gap your vehicle drives through to get in the garage. But you need to measure the overall guide width too. That way your door has enough space and can securely close your garage.
For height, your guide height encompasses the total amount your roller garage door will have to move up and down before it hits the ground. But you also need to measure out the headroom space for the cover hood. You also have to think about roll dimensions.
Complete Pre-Installation Checks
Before you install the door, ensure you have everything that your garage door needs. The pack should come with a kit which tells you everything you need. Some of the basic things you should have are an end plate, roller wheel, safety brake, guide channel, override handle, curtain slat, slat locks, a control panel, a radio remote control handset, a tubular motor, a steel tube, and a floating shaft end.
Also ensure that everything is in decent condition, works and isn’t damaged.
Steps to Installing Your Own Door
The first thing you need to install is the guide channel. They need to be perpendicular to each other, and you need to position the guides on either side of the door and drill holes in to keep them in place.
Fit your motor barrel into position. Ensure the manual override is in the right place, and your limit switches are visible. Once it’s installed with its captive bearing and safety brake, you should tighten the motor plate and lock it with a fixing bolt.
Your frame needs to be fitted above the door, keeping the pillars, lintel and header free of debris and obstacles. This goes above the guides. From there you’ll install the curtain by unwrapping it from its packaging and lift it above the door, into the guides. It needs to be secured with the locking straps.
This guide should be accurate for most Hormann garage doors. But if you are struggling, you can always call your supplier for further guidance. Some doors differ slightly from others.
Make Sure The Door Works
The last step is ensuring you’ve done everything right and the door works. You should test it going up and down, make sure the sensors are working and the sensitivity settings mean it’s opening and closing properly.
Once it’s all installed, you’re good to go!
Too Complicated? Use Garage Door Experts to Fit Your Door
However, if all the above sounds way too complex, you don’t have to do it yourself.
If you want to ensure you get a garage door fitted that has accurate measurements, and works as it should, the best way is to get a professional to fit it for you. While it seems like a hassle, there are professionals who are dedicated garage door experts.
When you’re busy, especially if you have a big family or a full-time job to attend to, it’s difficult to take multiple days out for your garage door to get fitted. But some companies can do it all in one day, bringing a template garage door to your property, measuring it, then cutting it and fitting it all in one appointment. You’ll only need to take one day at home to get it all done.
Then, they’ll show you how to work it, make sure everything is in order and refer you to an after sales team to support you if there are any issues. When you fit a door yourself, you may not get access to the same troubleshooting support.
So, while fitting your own roller garage door is an option, you can get an affordable garage door fitted for you for a reasonable price.
