From Plant To CBD: Here’s How Its Made

From Plant To CBD: Here’s How Its Made

by Cherie McCord

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a natural plant extract, deriving from the hemp plant. Unlike its relative the cannabis plant, hemp contain no THC, a psychoactive substance, but instead contains CBD. CBD is not only legal, but also non-addictive, non-psychoactive and actually can do more good than harm. CBD has many restorative qualities, helping people with a whole range of physical and mental issues. But how is CBD made? We explore how CBD is extracted from the hemp plant, so you can make the most informed decision possible when choosing to buy CBD oil.

Cultivating The Hemp Plant & Extracting CBD

CBD is extracted from industrial hemp, a legal plant in the UK, Europe, and the USA. CBD is cultivated from the hemp seeds, containing less than 0.2% THC, a negligible level of the psychoactive substance.

CBD extraction is a process that removes the substance from the plant. A variety of techniques are used in doing this, often with the use of solvents in order to separate the CBD molecule from the other compounds found within the plant.  This is a highly efficient and safe process of extracting CBD from the rest of the plant. Also, there are many health benefits weeds for sale can offer. There are many common methods of extraction, which we will explore.

  • CO2 Extraction

Perhaps the most common method, CO2 extraction is often used to extract essential oils for lotions and colognes, and even used to extract food flavourings. The hemp is placed in a chamber before CO2 gas is turned into liquid form, which is how CBD oil is efficiently extracted.

  • Alcohol Extraction

This is done through liquid solvents, usually ethanol (pure alcohol). This can help to retain the natural properties of hemp following extraction. This can be said to leave an unpleasant taste, but this is often down to the individual preference.

Testing CBD

Following the extraction of CBD, it must be tested before going on sale to the general public. Always ensure you are purchasing CBD from a reputable vendor who is CTA (Cannabis Trade Association) certified. These companies will have the CTA logo on their website, but always do your research. Companies such as CFAH are a reputable retailer such as this and can be trusted for the quality of their tested products. The quality of the final product is the most important element within the entire process, from plant to bottle. Companies that do not meet the governmental standard should not be used as a CBD vendor, so always ensure that anyone you buy off has the seal of approval.

When CBD is tested, all chemicals within will become evident. This should be clearly stated on every bottle or product that contains CBD, giving transparent, clear, and honest analysis of the process used, the results of the testing, and every chemical component within the CBD product. Always check for products with data sheets listing every chemical cannabinoid. If they have this, you will be ion your way to enjoying fully tested, certified CBD that makes the cut.
