Common Heat Pump Repairs That Homeowners Encounter

Common Heat Pump Repairs That Homeowners Encounter

by Cherie McCord

What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a way to heat and cool your home. There are two types, the air source, and the ground source. The air source will transfer the heat between the air outside your home and the air inside your home. The ground source will transfer the heat between the ground outside your home and the air inside your home.

You usually do not want to repair your heat pump on your own. You want to call a heating pump repair technician to do the job for you. They can do the job far better than you can do on your own.

This article will tell you some of the most common things that need to be repaired. It will help with knowing what these things are. You can also do more research to find the information that you need.

Common Heat Pump Repairs

  1. It Runs Continuously – If your device is running continuously, that is a sign that there is something wrong. There are many reasons that this happens and some you can fix on your own. One reason is that you have the thermostat set incorrectly. It could also be as simple as dirty air filters.
  1. It is Not Running – If you find that your heat pump is not working, there are things that you might be able to fix. You could have a simple thermostat issue – maybe your thermostat needs to be replaced: https://www.diychatroom.com/threads/replacing-heat-pump-thermostat.682139/. You might have had a power loss for some reason. It might be something worse that you will not be able to fix.
  1. Your Outdoor Unit is Frozen –Your heat pump is prepared to defrost a thin layer of ice that might have built up on the outdoor unit. It cannot do that with a thicker layer of ice. It might be frozen due to other factors, as well. It is best to have a technician come out to check those factors.
  1. The Indoor Air Handler is Not Operating –The air handler works with the unit to move the air inside your home. You would know that there is a problem with it if the outdoor unit is working but you are not getting air in your home. There are a few reasons that this could be happening including a tripped circuit breaker, a bad wiring connection, or a blown blower motor. You can fix the tripped circuit breaker on your own, but you need a technician for the rest.
  1. Heat Pump Not Heating –There are many reasons that your heat pump is not heating. Some of the reasons are that your thermostat is not correctly calibrated, your thermostat is set incorrectly, and you have dirty air filters. These are mostly easily repaired items that you can do on your own. You might need to call a technician for the calibration of your thermostat.
  1. It is Not Cooling – The unit might have issues cooling for some of the same reasons that it is not heating, including not having the thermostat set correctly. You could also have a faulty reversing valve, low refrigerant, and dirty air filters. You can change the dirty air filters on your own – this is an easy job. A repairman will need to help you with the rest.
  2. It Does not Switch from Heat to Cool or Vice Versa –This is probably due to a faulty reverse valve. This is the part that is responsible for switching the pump from heat to cool and back again. Learn more about that here. If it works for one but not the other, you will need this replaced. This is not something you can fix on your own – you will need a repairman to do it for you.
  3. It is Short Cycling –This means that it turns off soon after it turns on. This could be because you have an improperly sized unit, the system is overheating, or you have a refrigerant leak. These all require a technician to repair them. They are more technical issues than the average person can do on their own.
  1. It is Leaking Liquid –You do not want to ignore leaking water from your unit. This could cause mold to grow in or around the unit. It could also cause other issues with your unit and your home. You could have a refrigerant leak, or your drain line might be clogged. Call your technician to see what needs to be done.
  1. You Might Have Weird Smells –No one wants to have weird smells coming from your unit. This could happen due to mold growing in the heat pump. It could also be coming from an animal that has crawled in and died. You can clean these things on your own, or you could call a professional.
