What to do after a car crash

What to do after a car crash

by Cherie McCord

Always remain at the scene

If you come across a car accident make sure you stay at the scene of the accident if the person has been injured or killed and wait for the police to arrive at the scene. Leaving the scene of a car accident if you have injured someone can result in you being charged and arrested with a hit and run or you can be fined huge amounts and the sentence can be even worse if the person dies in the car accident. If it is only property damage that has been done at the accident you may leave only if you identify yourself to the people involved. If you do not identify yourself correctly you may be charged with a hit and run and again can lead to you being fined or put in jail for six months. If you’re in a car accident and the car involved has left the scene you should contact the police straight away as they can track them down and have them charged with a hit and run. If the driver who caused the accident is not traced by the police you may still be able to recover the damages with your insurance company. You might also want to know the things you need to do with what happens if you crash a leased car.

Seek medical attention first

The most important thing to do if you’re injured or someone else is injured in a car accident is to seek medical assistance. The first thing to do is call 911 in order to receive medical assistance or ask someone else at the scene to call for assistance for you. If you are being taken to the emergency room make sure to leave your contact details with the other drivers involved in the collision if you are able to.

Get to a safe place

If you are able to, you should always consider moving your car onto a hard shoulder or somewhere safer in order to prevent you blocking traffic and causing buildup on the roads and possibly create more collisions with other oncoming cars. However, if you think moving the car would cause more danger to either yourself or others, leave it where it is and wait for the police to come. Also if someone has been seriously injured or killed in a car accident always leave the car where it is until police arrive and can investigate the situation.

Keep record of the other vehicle

Once you have sought medical attention and made sure everyone in the accident is safe, write down or photograph the other vehicle’s details like the license plate number, the model and color of the car. You need this information in order to report it to accident reports California. It is also a good idea to get the car’s identification number which the driver will have to give themselves as it will be located either on their dashboard or inside the car door. If you attempt to do this yourself this would be a bad idea as touching someone’s property will cause more issues.
