Cloud services enable the use of IT infrastructure and software in the cloud. Thanks to them, you can access resources from anywhere – all you need is an internet connection. In what variants is access to the cloud offered? See the main models of cloud services.
Table of Contents
IaaS model (Infrastructure as a Service) – infrastructure as a service
The cloud service in the IaaS model allows you to use the necessary infrastructure. It then includes access to diverse resources, including servers, networks, and memory.
Thanks to this cloud service, there is no need to build and maintain your cloud infrastructure, which may entail high costs. At the same time, it allows you to use your platforms and software with the provider’s infrastructure.
Main features of the IaaS model:
- There is no need to buy the necessary equipment to create the infrastructure and incur costs related to its maintenance.
- The shared infrastructure can be individually tailored to the user’s needs in terms of memory and computing parameters.
- High level of security – responsibility for the operation of the infrastructure rests with the supplier, not the customer.
PaaS model (Platform as a Service) – platform as a service
The second available model of cloud services is PaaS, which allows you to use the platform as a service. It also includes servers, networks, and storage, which consists of the IaaS model.
Users can use a ready-made platform that allows them to handle various types of software, applications, and activities. This means it gives access to a cloud environment with multiple tools for designing, configuring, testing, maintaining, and managing applications.
Most often, the PaaS model is used by developers who can quickly implement new IT solutions without creating the necessary infrastructure and platform.
Main features of the PaaS model:
- Access to a platform that allows you to create, test, and manage applications without making the necessary backend yourself.
- Security issues lie with the cloud service provider – they are also responsible for backing up.
- Possibility of easy remote cooperation between cloud users.
SaaS model (Software as a Service) – software as a service
The third popular model is SaaS, i.e., a service that gives access to ready-made software in the cloud. It includes infrastructure, platform, and software, making it the most extensive cloud service.
Thanks to such a service, there is no need to install programs on computers and other devices because they are available online through a browser or a particular interface. It also gives access to a database that all users can use on an ongoing basis.
Main features of the SaaS model:
- A convenient form of access to the application via the Internet from anywhere in the world – without the need to install and update the software.
- The database is located on an external server, protecting the data against loss.
- Software in the SaaS model is usually made available for a fee through a subscription, so it does not require a one-time purchase.
