Does Your Home Need a Deck?

by molly famwat

Adding a deck to your home is an excellent way to create more space and provide a comfortable outdoor area for entertaining. Decks can add value to your home, as well as serve as a gathering place for family and friends. But before you start building, some important questions need to be answered:

First and foremost, does your property have the space for a deck? To determine the size of your deck, you’ll need to measure the area where it will be built. You should also consider any local building codes or regulations that may apply. If there is limited space on your property, a raised deck may be a good option as it can provide plenty of room without taking up too much space.

The next step is to decide what type of material you’d like to use for your deck. Popular choices include wood, composite materials, and vinyl. Each has its own benefits, so it’s important to weigh all the options before making a decision. Wood is often the least expensive option, but it requires regular maintenance to ensure that it remains in good condition. Composite materials are more durable and require less upkeep, while vinyl is even more durable and low-maintenance.

Once you’ve determined the size and type of material for your deck, you’ll need to decide what design features you’d like to include. Different designs create different experiences, so consider what you’d like the deck to be used for and take into account factors such as exposure to sun or shade, wind, and rain. Additionally, think about how accessible the deck will be from both inside and outside your home.

Finally, it’s time to choose the finishing touches. Decorative railings, benches, and other accessories can turn your deck into a cozy outdoor space with plenty of personality. Stain or sealant can be used to protect the wood and preserve its colour, while lighting options like lanterns, string lights, and solar-powered path lights can create an inviting atmosphere even after dark.

Lucid Building and Construction can help you consider all these factors and determine whether or not your home needs a deck.

Carpentry Skills

If you’re toying with the idea of building your own deck, you’ll need a good set of carpentry skills. Assembling decks isn’t especially complicated if you know what you’re doing, but it’s still important to understand and follow all safety regulations.

You may also want to hire a professional contractor if you don’t feel confident in your DIY skills. A professional can help you customise the design and materials to create a deck that suits your home’s style. When seeking a contractor, make sure that they are licensed, insured and experienced in deck construction.

If you have a specific vision in mind, don’t be afraid to share it with your contractor. Doing so will help ensure that you get the results you want and increase the chances of a successful build. For instance, you may have special features such as stairs or a railing in mind for your deck. Letting your contractor know about these ahead of time will help them plan out the project accordingly.

Be aware that while decks can be a great way to add extra living space, they also come with some added maintenance requirements. If you’re willing to keep up with the required maintenance, decking can add lots of value to your home!
