The DiSTI Corporation has built a Virtual Maintenance Trainer that allows students to familiarize themselves and practice maintenance tasks before entering the aircraft. The Western Army National Guard Aviation Training Site has introduced an of its kind VMT for the UH-72A Light Helicopter Repairer Course at the Silverbell Army Heliport.
With over 20 LUH-72 Lakotas, the Arizona Army National Guard and the Western Army National Guard Aviation Training Site (WAATS) utilize these aircraft to assist civil authorities. With the assistance of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol along the southwest border, these aircraft require regular maintenance at a higher standard than most army aircraft.
Since the LUH-72 is a Federal Aviation Administration-registered aircraft owned by the Army and the Army National Guard, it must adhere to the FAA standards of flight safety, which makes the training and maintenance even more stringent and strictly monitored.
