How to Expressively Dress Yourself

How to Expressively Dress Yourself

by Cherie McCord

To express who you are through style, you have to consider the looks that make you feel like you. While there may be trends, none of these fashion favorites matter if you are not dressing authentically. This means forgoing what’s “in” if it does not appeal to you. Here is a guide on the basics to help you get familiar with showcasing your personality through fashion.

Table of Contents

  • 1. What Colors Feel Like You?
  • 2. What Fabrics Make You Shine?
  • 3. What is the purpose or occasion?
  • 4. Don’t Forget To Add Accessories
  • 5. Dare To Be Bold!
  • Don’t Be Afraid To Take A Fashion Risk

1. What Colors Feel Like You?

The colors that you wear will say a lot about your personality. Lighter tones could suggest that you’re a social butterfly or consider yourself an optimistic person. Knowing which colors or color blocks speak to you will help you identify outfits that you can pair together based on these colors. Dark tones like black, purple, and burgundy might suggest edginess or that you have an eagerness for the Fall, an artsy personality, or love for punk rock fashion.

Of course, you want to keep things balanced, so finding outfits that have the right blend of expression and ease is essential. For example, if you’re going to showcase an aqua top, you might wear black pants with it so that the focus remains on your shirt. Adding too much color at once can make you look like a patchwork quilt.

2. What Fabrics Make You Shine?

The extent to which comfort plays a role in your style is about how you feel about comfort and its role in fashion. Some people are all about staying comfortable, and they say that linen is for summer and will wear sweats during their staff meetings. Others could care less about comfort and want to focus on the aesthetic of their clothes.

You will have to determine where you stand within these extremes, and an excellent way to figure that out is to consider the clothing fabrics you enjoy the most. Do you feel your best in cotton? Or do you love the look and feel of denim? Take some time to consider what fabrics make you shine to figure out how far comfort needs to be incorporated into your look.

3. What is the purpose or occasion?

Dressing according to the occasion shows respect for the event and for other people. For instance, a professional occasion demands choosing classic clothing items in neutral colors like black, navy, and gray and not in vibrant or bright colors. When attending a religious occasion, the clothing you wear should be modest and reflect the event, like an abaya for Eid. It helps to create an atmosphere that complements the event and graces it even more.

4. Don’t Forget To Add Accessories

The accessories you wear can highlight the general statement you’re trying to make with each outfit. Choose from scarves, bracelets, belts, jewelry, and more to create an authentic look that shows the world who you are.

If you’re not sure how to incorporate accessories, think about your overall mood and what that might look like on a visual scale.

You can then select the accessories that match the ideas you come up with. Fashion is all about using the creative side of your brain, so go for it and don’t overthink the process!

5. Dare To Be Bold!

To dress expressively, you have to be willing to show the world who you are. Don’t be afraid to wear the clothes that make you feel special. Even if they aren’t in style, (are Birkenstocks cool?) if they feel like you, they are perfect.

Dare to be bold and make some fashion statements that count. Who knows? You might end up inspiring someone else to do the same, or if you’re really lucky, some of your looks could be the next big thing in fashion. You never know! Mind your outfit for the first date to feel confident, for walking outside, not just to impress your collegues at work.

Don’t Be Afraid To Take A Fashion Risk

To dress for self-expression, consider the above four tips, and most of all, don’t be afraid to try new looks. Fashion takes courage. How else would recent trends develop if nobody ever dared to take a risk? Dress like your authentic self and wear what makes you feel like you!

In case you are underconfident about a dress that you think would make you look fat. Try a corset. It will cinch your waist in a minute and will make you feel like a goddess.
