A Guide to Goatee Styles

Men have different preferences for their facial hair. In the past, most men kept their mustache longer than the beard, but the goatee is becoming more popular. Although it was a plain beard style in the first days, men were willing to explore more goatee styles.

However, some goatee styles depend on the wearer’s face shape and how their facial hair grows. If you don’t grow a mustache, you might not be able to keep a circle beard or a detached one.

1. Defining a Goatee

A goatee is a short beard on your chin that resembles the clump of hair on a goat’s chin. You can also grow a goatee together with a mustache, a soul patch, or hair on the cheeks and neck. If you want to get a circle beard, you should grow your mustache until it connects with the goatee to make a complete circle.

2. There Is A Difference Between Goatee And Van Dyke

Although the Van Dyke is a beard style, there is a significant difference between it and the goatee. The goatee is the hair that grows on the chin, and it does not include the mustache. However, one of the beard styles, the circle beard, is easily confused with the Van Dyke.

The circle beard has a mustache that connects to the goatee, but the Van Dyke beard style is not connected on the sides of the mouth. The wearer should trim the hair between the mustache and the goatee to ensure no connection.

3. Different Goatee Styles To Try

a. Chin-Puff

The chin-puff resembles an actual goatee because the hair grows on the chin only. There are no sideburns or a mustache. The wearer grows the goatee longer and trims the hair on the cheeks altogether to leave them clean. You can shape the chin-puff to be as wide as your mouth or make it narrower.

b. The Circle Goatee

The circle style is a common style worn by many celebrities, including Idris Elba. It consists of a mustache that joins the goatee to make a circle-like shape around your mouth. You can also let the hair grow long, and this version is called the long goatee.

c. Disconnected Beard

Another style that resembles the circle beard is the disconnected goatee. It features a goatee and a mustache, but the two don’t connect. They are also not closer to joining like the Van Dyke, because the disconnection is made at the beginning of the jawline. The goatee style is easy to grow and style, and it is common among young men.

d. Van Dyke

The Van Dyke style combines the mustache and goatee, but the two don’t connect. This beard style has a T-shape, and there is a soul patch that resembles the one on the chin puff. While it is mostly worn for casual occasions, you can rock it for official occasions as well.

e. Anchor Beard

The anchor beard was common among sailors because it was shaped like the anchor they used to sail the ship. The beard style resembles a Van Dyke, with the difference being a detached goatee that outspreads along your jawline. The wearer should let the goatee grow wider compared to the mustache. It is also combined with a soul patch to create the anchor shape.

f. Scruffy Goatee

If you cannot grow thick sideburns but have a thick goatee, you can style it in the scruffy goatee. This style features the weak scruffy hair on the man’s cheeks with the thick goatee. You can also grow the mustache and let it connect with the goatee. The style is easy to achieve and maintain, and it doesn’t require many products to keep.

g. Grey Hair Goatee

Old is gold, and greying hair makes a beautiful goatee. Do not dye your goatee black. Leave the grey strands to blend well with the rest of your grey facial hair. You can grow your beard together with the mustache and let them connect or separate. Young men with black hair also admire the style.
