by molly famwat

IAS stands for Indian Administrative Services. It is a recruitment exam carried out by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). The IAS Syllabus has been broadly classified into two categories: The Prelims and Mains. The Prelims stage is a qualifying round. Hence, marks obtained by aspirants in the first stage i.e Prelims are not added. In this stage, the paper or test is objective.

The Mains is the second stage for UPSC or IAS exam. This stage is descriptive and the marks are added to the final list. Candidates who clear the Mains stage can appear for the interview, also known as the personality test round. The final merit list is prepared by summing up the marks obtained in the mains and personality test rounds or interviews.

  • Prelims: The Prelims also known as the Preliminary stage are a qualifying round or stage where the sole body of UPSC checks the willpower and patience of the candidate. The marks obtained in this stage won’t be further added in the next rounds. Hence, if a candidate scores full marks in this stage, it is of no use. However, scoring full marks is virtually impossible. The aspirants are required to score marks based on the cut-off. This cut-off changes every year. However, not drastically. The syllabus for prelims is further classified into two types. They are GS- 1 and GS-2. Here, GS stands for General Studies.

  1.  General Studies Paper 2: GS Paper 2 consists of 80 questions. However, the maximum marks remain the same.
  • Mains: After clearing the first test or round, the candidates reach the second round. This stage is known as the mains. It is self-explanatory just how significant this round is. Candidates who do well in this round can definitely hope to see their respective names in the final merit list. The main paper is a descriptive paper, unlike the prelims. The main stage comprises seven papers along with two qualifying papers whose marks are not added. The First Paper is an Essay that can be written in any of the scheduled languages. In the remaining six papers, two optional papers range from subjects like Anthropology to Mathematics. You can find the list of subjects on the main website of UPSC.
