Was The American Revolution Avoidable?
King George’s thirst for total control over the colonies has resulted in the American Revolutionary War. That became an important event in the formation of the United States. The revolution became unstoppable when a fury like wildfire spread across the minds of the American colonists after finally reaching their breaking point under British tyranny who imposed a collective of unimaginably cruel acts on them; these acts such as the Intolerable Acts and the response to it preluded the unity of the colonies and awakened a surge of desire for Independence.
Before the implementation of the Intolerable Acts that caused the colonists to snap, there were a good number of reasons why there was existing tension between the colonies and the mother country. Mercantilism and the Navigation Acts marked the beginning of this tension followed by several unfair laws, and rules. The Proclamation of 1763, the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Declaratory Acts, Townshend Acts were each a brick to the growing wall between the relationship of the colonies and Great Britain, and finally, the Intolerable Acts completed this wall which the British could no longer manipulate or destroy . The colonists were pushed to the edge by the Intolerable Acts, and after their offering of peaceful negotiation got rejected by the British, no wonder they resorted to the idea of revolution to claim what is right for them and show resistance against the British Parliament. Anyone who had to endure such abusive laws would eventually turn their patience to a thread. Starting a revolution was their only way out. The Intolerable Acts served as the colonist’s wakeup call for them to act and unite and stand against Britain’s abuse of their authority.
In 1774, the birth of the First Continental Congress was the response to the Intolerable Acts. Enraged by King George’s proposal of the ridiculous acts, the colonies decreed their move by assembling the First Continental Congress attended by fifty-six delegates from twelve of the thirteen colonies. It is arguable that this was the first government of America and also the first step of the revolution; however, this still cannot be addressed as call independence. The Intolerable Acts made the revolution unstoppable. If it were not for these harsh acts, the colonies would never have been forced to fight for their rights and act as one unit; they would not have savored the taste of liberty and freedom.
