How Do You Write a Graduation Announcement Letter?

by Olgatin Olgatin Leave a Comment

Congratulations, you made it! You’re finally graduating. While you’re in the process of getting an education, it feels like a slow burn. But when it’s over, you look back and think about how it all happened in the blink of an eye. You’ve put in the hard work, and your graduation signifies an important life milestone. The best way to share the news is through grad announcements. You can mail them out to family members and friends who have been looking forward to the day. But what should your card include? Here’s how you can write a grad announcement letter that stands out from the rest.

Table of Contents

  • Start with the most important details.
  • Make it personal.
  • Use an inspirational quote.
  • Include photos.

Start with the most important details.

The inner envelope is where you’ll put the graduation card. Every graduation announcement will indicate a few important details. For starters, you’ll need to include your full name and the year you are graduating. Making sure that your graduation year makes it onto the grad announcement ensures that there’s a timestamp of your accomplishment. Your graduation announcement card should also include the name of your school, your degree and major, and any honors. Remember that this isn’t an invitation. A graduation announcement is typically sent after the ceremony has already taken place.

Make it personal.

Graduation announcements can feel a bit too formal without any other greetings. If you want to make it personal, don’t just include the details of the graduation. Add a personal message. This is the portion in which you should announce how grateful you are to have come so far. Maybe you want to thank your parents, friends, or guardians for their support throughout the last few years. Keep it simple and short, but try not to sound monotonous.

Use an inspirational quote.

If you’re not too sure about sending out your announcement with a personal message but you still want to show off your personality, then use a quote. You might even want to include both a message and a quote. It’s completely up to you! Choose a quote that resonated with you throughout your college education. It’s a great way to show off what you’ve learned in college and how you plan to take those lessons into your future. If you’re having trouble writing your personal message, perhaps choosing a quote first might inspire you to come up with a few words. A good example of a quote to use for your custom graduation announcement would be one by Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world.” This would be a great pick for a graduate who is planning to pursue a career in the service of others.

Include photos.

Lastly, you’ll want to include a photo of yourself in your cap and gown. Some people opt to add senior photos instead of graduation photos, and that works well, too. Students typically have some sort of photoshoot or have their friends and family take photos of them to use for any invitations or graduation cards. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your photos! They don’t have to be pictures of you either. If you’re pursuing a career in law, you can insert a photo related to that. Or if you’re pursuing a career in animation, you can create a cartoon version of yourself. You can even just choose your school colors and forgo photos.

Your graduation announcement should not just reflect your accomplishments: It should reflect who you are as a person and who you aim to become.
