Everything you need to know about polycarbonate

Everything you need to know about polycarbonate

by Cherie McCord

As we move through our days, we use plastic at almost every turn, often without us even realizing it. Plastic is used to frame our glasses, in the interiors of our cars as buttons, and to package our food.

There are hundreds of types of plastics, to meet the hundreds of uses we have in our everyday lives for plastic. One of the most common and useful kinds of plastic available is polycarbonate.  It is used in a slew of industries to create all kinds of products. It is extremely useful and versatile because it can withstand extreme temperatures, and it is also lightweight and durable. It also comes in a variety of shapes, making it useful in a variety of situations and easy to use.

Versatile

The nature of polycarbonate means that it can be easily manipulated into a variety of shapes that can be used for a variety of applications, across home, architecture, or DIY projects, and in the construction or manufacturing industries.

Resistant to extreme temperatures

Polycarbonate is perfect for use outdoors, or in settings where it will be exposed to outside temperatures, like as doors or windows because it can withstand temperatures low as -40C and as high as 130C.

Strong

It is 250 times more shatterproof than glass and is just as clear. This makes it the perfect material to replace glass in certain situations including:

  • Doors
  • Windows
  • Balcony screens
  • Security screens
  • Skylights

Easy to use

Once you get the polycarbonate where you need it, it is easy to shape it into the item you need. It is lightweight, that makes it easy to transport to where you need it for your project. You can use tools that you probably have in your toolkit like a circular saw or jigsaw to shape the polycarbonate.

Recyclable

Unlike many plastics, which are very hard to break down and cause harm to the environment, polycarbonate can be melted down and re-molded into something new over and over again making it an extremely sustainable option.

If you’ve got a DIY, renovation, or construction project where you think polycarbonate is the right material for you, you can contact Plastral.

Plastral is the leading plastic supplier in Australia and they have a huge range of options available for purchase from their website. Plastral’s team is also available to answer any questions about the kind of plastic that you need, and they can ship your order anywhere in Australia.
