How Does a Credit Card Relief Program Work?

How Does a Credit Card Relief Program Work?

by Cherie McCord

If you have found that you are not making any progress on your debt, even if you make payments on a regular basis, you might start to feel overwhelmed. There are credit card relief program options on the market and they can help you to break free of the financial burdens that can give you relief from your dept.

However, these programs aren’t for everyone and even if you feel that you need one of them to help you through the circumstances you are in, you will want to understand what you are getting into. How does a credit card relief program work? That depends on the program you choose. Here are some to consider:

Debt Settlement

This option can cause you to feel rather nervous, and with good reason, but it can also help you to get your debt down to a lower level than what you originally owed. With debt settlement, you will work with a company that will likely tell you to stop making payments on your debts. Instead, you put that money into a separate savings account.

The debt settlement company will then go to your creditors and try to settle your debt for a lower amount. Once the agreement is reached, you pay off the creditors for a lower amount. It can feel like a game of chicken, in a way, and you might get calls from collection companies that can unnerve you during the process since you aren’t making payments.

Credit Card Consolidation

If you have several credit cards, all of which have balances on them, it can be hard to keep up with the payments. Plus, you may never see the balances going down, even when you do make payments because of high interest rates. In that case, credit card consolidation can help. You get a loan to cover all of your credit card debt. Those debts are completed and then, all you have to do is pay down the loan.

You have one monthly payment, which makes things simpler for your budget. Plus, these loans generally have a much lower interest rate on them than your credit cards did, which means you will pay less on the loan over the length of time you are paying on it. You also see the balance going down and you have a hard end date as to when the loan will be completed. Learn more about Freedom Debt Relief’s credit card relief program.

Debt Relief Through Bankruptcy

If your credit cards aren’t your only debt issue and you have no other resort, declaring bankruptcy can get any unsecured debt you have cleared. This option can total your credit score and may stay on your credit report for a decade. It can be hard to work through, but it could be the only option you have available to you if your circumstances warrant it.

What Not To Do

No matter what kind of credit card relief program you look into, there are certain things you are going to want to avoid doing, such as:

-Continuing your spending habits. You need to create a budget and stick to it so you don’t put yourself into further trouble than you already have.

-Sign onto a program without all the info. Any program you consider needs to be completely vetted. You want to understand the process thoroughly so you can move forward with confidence.

-Use a disreputable company. There’s a lot of information out there about credit card relief companies and it’s wise to do your research so you can trust the people you are working with.

It might feel hard, or even impossible, to get yourself out of credit card debt, but once you understand how does a credit card relief program work, you can move toward the right program for your situation and help yourself out of your current circumstances.
